Why Do Santas Look Different? – A Quick Answer Guide

KIDS ARE CURIOUS BY NATURE, AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE THE MOST INTERESTING DOUBTS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW LIFE WORKS AND WHY THINGS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE. A LOT OF THE HARDER-TO-ANSWER QUESTIONS COME AROUND CHRISTMAS, AND ONE OF THESE HAPPENS TO BE “WHY DO SANTAS LOOK DIFFERENT?”, WHICH IS A PRETTY HARD ONE TO ANSWER SOMETIMES. BUT DON’T WORRY! HERE IS A QUICK ANSWER GUIDE YOU CAN READ THROUGH AND GET PREPARED FOR THIS QUESTION!

Different People Have Different Art Styles

Since no one knows exactly what Santa Claus looks like, people let their imagination fly when they’re drawing Santa on wrapping paper, posters, in cartoons, and other things. So naturally, different artists portray Mr. Claus in different styles and with different features.

Your kid will love this answer because 1) it will make them feel like they’re not the only one who doesn’t know what Santa looks like, and 2) because it will open their eyes to the beautiful Santa Claus art, and look further into it and see the artists’ imagination behind the art.

Different Cultures Mean Different Santa Clauses

The world is a very culturally diverse place, and since we all come from different parts of the world with different traditions and different histories, we all think Santa looks different. For example, Slovenia has 3 different Santa figures and they all look different and represent different Christmas celebrations, South Africa has Krismis Vader, and China has Dun Che Lao Ren.

All these Santas look different, but represent Santa Claus as we know him. They all bring joyous gifts during Christmas, and they all bring cheer and happiness to people during this magical holiday. So explaining that Santa changes a little bit depending on the culture it is from is a great way to educate kids about cultural diversity and also a more educated answer to a serious question.

We All Want Santa to Look Like Us

Another great way to answer this question is by explaining how we all want Santa to look just like us, no matter what we look like. We need culturally and racially diverse Santa Clauses because we are all different, and there is no reason for Santa not to be!

Santa looking like us allows us to feel more understood by Santa, and helps us know that Santa is just like you and me. He is just as diverse as all of us are, and he loves it! He loves it when we portray him in different ways, and he loves seeing all our art about him. Until he shows us how he really looks, we are all just going to imagine him looking just like us!

There are not too many tangible answers to this question without using the word “magic” or the sentence “just because”, and so this list comes out being a little short. But I think that a great backup answer is always going to be “no one actually knows what he looks like!”, and that might satisfy the curiosity in the kids before the next rapid-fire round of Santa questions comes. If you have more answers for me to add, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to add them. In the meantime, have a great Christmas and answer on!
