NEW YEAR’S EVE IS FINALLY HERE, AND WE GET THE CHANCE TO BID 2020 A HUGE GOODBYE AND WELCOME IN 2021 WITH A GREAT CELEBRATION! LIKE MOST FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD, YOU’RE MOST LIKELY GOING TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR AT HOME WITH YOUR KIDS AND OTHER LOVED ONES.
This isn’t what we’re usually accustomed to doing, so how can you make a new year’s eve party great for the kids and the adults present? In this blog I’d love to give you some fun ideas for new year’s eve with kids and some kid-friendly activities for new year’s eve!
Bring Out the Sparklers!
Sparklers are a super fun activity for both kids and adults, and they’re very reminiscent of past NYE celebrations. Since everyone loves sparklers, give them a try as a fun activity you can do with everyone!
One of my favorite ideas for this year is to make the most out of your patio or yard, and set up little activities for the people present — one of which can be sparkler pictionary (yes, I just invented that!!). If you keep the pictures simple enough, the teams can guess what the sparkler holder is drawing, which works because sparklers leave little trails of light where they’ve passed, and they last for just enough time to try to guess what’s being drawn!
Set Out a Snack Bar
One of the easiest ways to entertain is by setting out a snack bar. You can make delicious little snacks for everyone on a low budget, and it really amps up the party vibe. You can make one for kids and one for adults so that the kids don’t turn their nose up at “stinky cheese”, and the adults aren’t confined to mac n’ cheese bites.
A great way to make this a fun activity as well as a delicious treat is by making the snack bar an assembly line. Set out crackers, bread, and any other base you’d like, then set out all the delicious accompaniments such as ham cubes, chicken, other meats, veggies, and anything else that you heart desires, and then set out other toppings that you’d like to add to the snacks. Everyone will love them, and the kids will love making their own little snacks in the assembly line.
You can also convert this into a dessert bar if you’d like (check the link for some fun decoration ideas). A few years back, I did this for my kid’s birthday party and the kids loved it. I set out ice cream, ice cream toppings, and loads of whipped cream, and the kids absolutely loved making their own sundaes. I highly recommend this for your NYE party with kids — it’ll be a hit!
Family Game Night: Kids vs Adults
This is one of my personal favorites for lockdown fun, since we used to do this over the holidays when I was growing up. Gather all the games you’d like to play — it can be board games or card games or homemade fair games or anything else that you’d like to play together.
Simply divide up the teams, (we often go two kids on one team to one adult on the other team to make the playing field equal) and watch the fun unfold! You can even let the kids pick one game and then the adults pick the next for a fun switch up. I know you’ll love this one because it’s a fun bonding experience for the entire family, and you’ll all end up having a great time on NYE. Plus, what’s better than welcoming the new year with fun and laughter and love?!
Set and Share New Year’s Resolutions
Kids aren’t usually into making new year’s resolutions like adults are, but this can be a really fun opportunity to explain more about why people make new year’s resolutions and what it’s like to set goals and accomplish them throughout the year.
You can all sit around together after dinner and set and share your new year’s resolutions. You can also add to this awesome experience by each sharing how you can help each other reach and accomplish those goals, which I feel really shows the love that the family has for one another, and also helps kids understand that we can all help and uplift each other on our journeys through life in different ways.
As you can see, there are many great things you can do to have a great new year’s eve celebration with kids! You can really make the most out of the evening together, and the very best part is that you’ll get to say goodbye to 2020 and welcome 2021 with the people you love the most in the entire world. If that’s not setting the pace for 2021, then I don’t know what is! So have an amazing new year’s eve, and cheers to 2021 being the best year yet!
